Mobile Service Clouds: A self-managing infrastructure for autonomic mobile computing services

Abstract. We recently introduced Service Clouds, a distributed infrastructure designed to facilitate rapid prototyping and deployment of autonomic communication services. In this paper, we propose a model that extends Service Clouds to the wireless edge of the Internet. This model, called Mobile Service Clouds, enables dynamic instantiation, composition, configuration, and reconfiguration of services on an overlay network to support mobile computing. We have implemented a prototype of this model and applied it to the problem of dynamically instantiating and migrating proxy services for mobile hosts. We conducted a case study involving data streaming across a combination of PlanetLab nodes, local proxies, and wireless hosts. Results are presented demonstrating the effectiveness of the prototype in establishing new proxies and migrating their functionality in response to node failures.

Ultrastructure of Dufour\u27s Glands in Active and Inactive Horn-faced Bees, Osmia cornifrons (Hymenpotera: Megachilidae)

Dufour\u27s glands from inactive and active Osmia cornifrons were studied using light and electron microscopy. These glands are very similar in both classes of bees. Each gland consists of a flattened sac of simple epithelial cells bordering a cuticulated lumen with an underlying subcuticular space. Each epithelial cell contains a single nucleus (with several nucleoli), a few short microvilli, numerous elements of rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, many mitochondria, sparse Golgi bodies, a few microtubules, and, rarely, a myelin figure. The basal surface of each cell is covered by a basal lamina composed of two distinct layers. Septate junctions occur between cells. Associated visceral muscle cells contain atypical actin and myosin myofilaments with larger than usual diameters and without conventional filament disposition patterns. These cells also contain a transverse tubule system, A-and I-bands, dyads, and Z-lines. Unmyelinated nerve processes, containing empty and full neurosecretory vesicles, are located adjacent to some of the muscles

Experience With Top Gun Wingman: A Proxy-Based Graphical Web Browser for the 3Com PalmPilot

... this paper, we advocate moving application complexity from thin clients to an adaptive middleware proxy (AMWP), an infrastructural application server platform designed to support large populations and diverse applications. We describe one such application, Top Gun Wingman, a graphical, split Web browser for the Palm Pilot PDA that is currently in use by more than 11,000 users around the world. Our discussion focuses on the design philosophy, implementation, performance, and lessons learned from our experience with the Wingman client and the middleware proxy that supports it
